Square Enix has confirmed that there will be a new Tomb Raider game released in 2018, with fans speculating that it’ll be titled ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’. The news broke via the Tomb Raider Twitter account with reassurances from Square Enix that the game would be made available to fans soon after announcement, a completely different tactic from previous Tomb Raider launches.
Will it be one of the best games of 2018? It’s certainly one of the most anticipated games, that’s for sure. Here, we discuss everything we know about the new Tomb Raider game, including possible release date rumours, platforms and the latest gameplay news.
What will the next Tomb Raider game be called?
The announcement of an upcoming Tomb Raider game is still so fresh that not even the official name of the game has been revealed – or has it? There could be a clue in the tweet from the Tomb Raider Twitter account where it’s revealed that a new Tomb Raider game is coming in 2018.

Shortly after the announcement was tweeted, Twitter users noticed something interesting about the statement. If you look at the first letter of each sentence in the statement, it spells out “SHADOW”. While it’s far from confirmation, it suggests that the previously rumoured “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” branding is – at least in part – correct.
Of course, it’s simply speculation at the moment so we could be wrong, but we’ll find out either way when the game is fully revealed in 2018.
Tomb Raider 2018 release date rumours
So, when are we going to be able to play the unannounced Tomb Raider game? As stated in the tweet from the Tomb Raider Twitter account, the game should be announced and released in 2018. And while game announcements are usually months or even years before the game’s release, Square Enix is doing things a little differently this time around.
Unlike with previous Tomb Raider announcements, we should apparently be able to play the game fairly soon after the official reveal. “Driven by our goal of putting fans first, we want you to know that it won’t be very long between the official reveal and when you can play.”
Considering that many AAA-rated games are announced years before they’re released, it’s a refreshing approach from Square Enix that should resonate well with fans. After all, the Hype Train giveth and the Hype Train taketh away.
Tomb Raider 2018 platforms
While with many games it’s fairly easy to predict which platforms it’ll be available on, Tomb Raider has had an interesting past when it comes to platform exclusivity. Despite originally being a PlayStation title, the last game in the series – Rise of the Tomb Raider – was an Xbox One exclusive, meaning that PS4 fans had to wait an extra year before they could enjoy the beautifully designed game.
Admittedly the decision to make the platform a timed exclusive was met with backlash from fans of the series, so we’re not sure that Square Enix would risk it – especially when it’s “putting fans first” as stated in the announcement tweet.
So, we expect the upcoming Tomb Raider title to be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC, with support for PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X. While we’d also love to see a Tomb Raider title come to the Nintendo Switch, the verdict is still out on whether Nintendo’s handheld console is up to scratch when it comes to the beautifully detailed environments found in Tomb Raider titles.
Tomb Raider 2018 gameplay rumours
In terms of gameplay, there’s not much to go on. The initial statement from the Tomb Raider Twitter account doesn’t give anything away about what to expect from gameplay – not the location, time or even the theme of the game.
Our only titbit of information about the upcoming Tomb Raider game? It’s related to the branding leak earlier in 2017 referenced above. In addition to the potential name of the upcoming Tomb Raider game, images of Mesoamerican step pyramids were spotted on a marketing firm’s website. It could suggest the location of the upcoming game, or it could be completely unrelated. Only time will tell!
