A lot of new games were announced at Sony’s E3 2016 conference, including Days Gone and God of War. Another is the brand new Spider-Man title for the PS4.
Here’s everything we know about the game, from the first announcement trailer up to the gameplay reveal at E3 2017.
When is the Spider-Man release date?
So far the most we know in terms of release date is that the game is due some time in 2018, as confirmed by the E3 2017 gameplay trailer. But with Sony hosting a PGW 2017 Media Showcase, we might be in for some Spider-man-themed surprises and maybe even the announcement of an official release date.
That hasn’t stopped Amazon opening pre-orders for the game though, which is a PS4 exclusive.
What will gameplay be like?
Thanks to E3 2017 we’ve seen our first gameplay from Spider-Man, and so now have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
The nine-minute clip shows off a mission in which Spider-Man intervenes in a fight between two rival criminal gangs. In many ways, the game looks to have taken inspiration from Rocksteady’s successful Batman: Arkham games, with a blend of stealth and larger melee brawls.
Spider-Man can use his agility and webbing to sneak round enemies before incapacitating them one at a time, though the bright daytime setting means there’s less of a focus on hiding in the shadows than in the Batman titles.
When a fight becomes inevitable, Spidey looks to be as agile as you’d hope, flipping around, throwing bad guys up into the air, and using webbing to immobilise some goons while he takes others on head-on. The webbing can also be used to throw nearby objects like bricks, and at one point even swing round a giant metal girder to take out a group of enemies in one go.
The latter half of the footage takes more inspiration from Uncharted, with an exciting semi-cinematic chase sequence replete with quick-time events as Spider-Man works to save civilians, take down his enemies, and dodge obstacles in the environment.
Oh, and stick around to end of the video for a tease about the appearance of a certain well-known Spider-Man character who we suspect may have a bigger role to play in the game…
Following the E3 trailer, Sony showcased another teaser trailer during its’ PGW 2017 presentation. The trailer gives us a glimpse of what Peter Parker is capable of, and shows the moment that Spider-man and Miles Morales were brought together to protect New York City.
The trailer can be seen below.
In an interview with GamesTM, creative director Bryan Intihar revealed that Miles Morales will have a much bigger presence than originally anticipated. “Miles didn’t start out with as big of a role as he has now,” Intihar explained.
“But as we started doing more research on the character, I went back and just started reading more and more and more. I’ll be honest, I just fell in love with the character. Just like MJ can provide a different perspective on the world, I thought Miles and his relationship to Peter brings something different.”
How might it bring something different? “Miles is younger than Peter, and what they experience, and how they get into each other’s live is pretty unique. I said off the bat that we wanted to make a unique Spider-Man universe” Intihar explained.
It’s worth clarifying that the game won’t be based on the Spider-Man: Homecoming film or have any connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that it will feature a more experienced Spidey rather than a young Peter Parker.
Finally, this is separate from the upcoming ‘Avengers Project’ games from Square-Enix, and won’t be part of the the same shared universe.
