Sonos might be coming late to the smart speaker party, but it appears to be coming in style. Although it will have Alexa built-in at launch, support for Google Assistant will be coming in 2018, meaning you won’t have to choose between the virtual assistants.
When is the Sonos Smart Speaker release date?
Following a 4 October launch event, the Sonos One has become available to pre-order direct from Sonos. Delivery is slated for 24 October.
The Google Assistant support will be available in 2018.
How much is the Sonos One?
The Sonos smart speaker costs £199 in the UK, which is roughly twice what you’ll pay for Echo and Google Home, but with more audio muscle inside.
What are the features and specifications?
With Amazon Alexa built-in, the Sonos One supports many of the same features as the Amazon Echo itself, though you will need to download the Sonos app in addition to the Alexa app. With voice commands you can start-, stop- and control music playback, hear the latest news, check the weather and manage smart-home devices. It will also integrate with the many Alexa Skills available in the Alexa app.
Having downloaded the Sonos app for setup you’ll also be able to use this to control playback, and you’ll find support for Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, internet radio and other streaming services.
The Sonos One offers multi-room audio, allowing you to wirelessly connect it to other Sonos speakers and play music all around your home.
Hailing from Sonos, audio quality is expected to be much better than you would get from the standard Amazon Echo. The One has two Class-D digital amps, a tweeter and a mid-woofer.
The One also has an adaptive noise suppression algorithm it can cut down background noise to focus on your commands, even when music is playing.
On the top panel sits a capacitive touch control for volume and audio playback. Also here is an LED that indicates when the Sonos One is switched on and ready to listen, and if music is playing as you voice your command it will momentarily turn down the volume so as to hear you better.
The Sonos One comes in black or white. It has a premium-looking rectangular design with a smooth matte finish.
