Destiny 2 fans are getting ready for Bungie’s next big expansion to the game and it’s coming later today.
This was teased by Bungie in a Tweet Monday evening, with the developer telling fans: “Tomorrow, the second year of Destiny 2 will be revealed”
In addition to the above, the teaser came with a short trailer previewing where the game is headed and it appears to suggest Guardians are headed back to The Reef.
The clip itself shows Cayde-6 and a non-descript Guardian (likely the player) who is modelling some new Hunter gear that’s also coming with year 2.
Interestingly, whilst this will no doubt lead to more story content revolving around the home of the Awoken, it’s possible we could see an extended public space to mirror the first game.
For those who don’t remember, the last time Guardians were in the Reef — in Destiny’s House of Wolves expansion — players allied themselves with a Fallen leader from the House of Judgement named Variks, The Loyal.
And rumours suggest the Forsaken DLC could once again see an unlikely alliance between player and The Fallen (more on that further down).
We’ll find out for sure later today when Bungie reveal all in a new livestream event which is starting at 5pm BST, Tuesday 5th.
As we alluded to above, the Forsaken expansion may have ties to another Fallen alliance, potentially linked to a Fallen Captain seen in the reactor room on Titan.
Players will have likely run into this Captain after beating the games Red War campaign in Destiny 2.
Here’s a superbly succinct explanation courtesy of Polygon:
The Fallen Captain’s name is fairly interesting, considering the fall expansion’s title: Mithrax, The Forsaken. When you come across Mithrax and his Hive foe, you can choose whom to attack. You can kill Mithrax if you attack him first, leaving you to then kill the Hive Knight. However, if you kill the Hive Knight first and hold your fire on Mithrax, he’ll turn to you, speak something in Fallen and teleport away rather than attack. It’s possible that Bungie could be using this interaction with Mithrax to tease the Forsaken expansion.
Polygon goes on to explain that Mithrax is a member of the House of Dusk, which is a relatively new Fallen faction according to the Destiny Wiki.
Despite the above, there are also rumours of Bungie adding a fifth enemy faction to the game. Certainly based on the way Bungie staff have been hyping the release it seems as though we could be getting much more than simply more of the same.
Bungie touched on the new Year 2 expansion in the last ‘This Week At Bungie’ blog post last week.
As usual, Community Manager for Bungie, Deej, will lead the reveal and here’s what he had to say on the most recent blog post:
We’d like to invite you to catch a glimpse of what we have planned for the second year of Destiny 2. We have some big ideas for how we’re going to transform your Guardian lifestyle and reinforce your hobby as an interplanetary hero. We’ll tell you all about it, and we’ll do it live!
You’ll hear from many members of our development team, who will set some big goals for September in their own words. We’ll explore deeper into new territory with Game Director Steve Cotton and Project Lead Scott Taylor—two faces that you might recognize from previous reveals.
We’ll respond to a bunch of community feedback and unveil some other things you haven’t even been looking forward to… yet. We’ll top it all off with a look at a new Roadmap with exciting new promises for everyone.
The team also teased that this stream will be “the beginning of a conversation that will last all summer long” so don’t expect to learn everything about the Forsaken expansion.
We could hear more at E3 2018 with a possible release planned for the end of the Summer in September.
